Organisations have invested heavily in systems that support different aspects of their work. Requirements management systems support engineering traceability. Enterprise architecture platforms help organisations understand and evolve their organisational landscape. Project and workflow tools coordinate execution. Analytics platforms monitor performance. Knowledge and AI systems help people discover, understand and use information. Each provides important value. Each is designed around a particular concern. Organisational work, however, rarely follows those boundaries.
A programme is shaped simultaneously by objectives, agreements, requirements, policies, risks, evidence, operational constraints, architectural choices and many other significant work items. These are often created by different teams, managed in different systems and understood through different professional perspectives. Many existing approaches establish valuable relationships within their own domain, or across a limited set of connected domains.
This fragmentation carries a staggering premium. According to the Project Management Institute (PMI) [1], up to US$75 million per billion spent on major programmes is put at risk purely due to ineffective communication of critical project information. Cross-industry research, including data compiled by McKinsey, indicates that knowledge workers waste around 20% of their total time simply searching for internal information and tracking down lost context. While existing tools manage domain-specific data, they fail to maintain the shared structural view required to connect these pieces, leaving organisations vulnerable to compounding coordination costs.
A complementary question remains. How can organisations maintain a shared understanding of the important relationships between significant work items across teams, domains and time, without first having to navigate every specialist system? That question became the starting point for Timeinx.

The first part of Alfred Korzybski’s well-known observation is widely quoted: “A map is not the territory.”
The second part is equally important: “A map is not the territory it represents, but, if correct, it has a similar structure to the territory, which accounts for its usefulness.”

Systems engineers must actively govern this flow by knowing what information to share. The question behind Timeinx began while working in systems engineering, where I repeatedly saw how difficult it was to maintain a shared understanding of how work connected across teams, domains and time. As I later worked across systems engineering, enterprise architecture and information systems, the same question kept returning in different forms. The environments changed. The challenge remained remarkably similar. Systems engineering has long recognised the importance of interfaces, interactions and traceability, yet it still faces alignment challenges. Governance influences programmes. Operational constraints affect engineering. Evidence informs compliance. Business priorities reshape delivery. Transformation initiatives influence ongoing work.
